What Led to Exchange

As I write exchange application essays, they seem to have one common question. "Why are you going on exchange?" I feel like this is a question that should not be limited to five hundred words. It is something I, and many other exchange students, find ourselves being asked often. I do not blame people for wanting to know the answer; they are simply curious why anyone would leave their home to live in a foreign country. However, when I am asked this question, I find it difficult to answer. I feel like people expect me to tell them the answer in a simple sentence. Chances are, if I told them "I want to challenge myself in a new culture", they still would not understand. More questions would arise. This is why I feel this question deserves a long post; people need to know why I want to do this, and I cannot answer the question simply.

My Grandpa
This is my grandpa. My grandma always tells me, "You are like your grandpa from the top of your head to the bottom of your toes." I do agree with her. Ultimately, he is the reason why I want to travel. The first stories I was told about adventure were from my grandpa. He was in the navy and he got the chance to travel all over the Pacific and East/Southeast Asia, as well as trips after the navy to Italy, Hawaii, and all over the US and Canada. I have not met anyone who has traveled as much as my grandpa, and I am influenced by his travels so much. Unfortunately, my grandpa is affected by Parkinson's disorder and is often very weak. However, he never fails to tell me a story about his adventures when I ask him. I love him so much and he will always be the main reason for my love of travel and adventure.

My aunt in Italy (1980)
And how does the love for travel get mixed in with a desire to participate in a foreign exchange program? Well, it is all because of my Aunt Annie. She spent a summer in Urbino, Italy when she was seventeen years old. I also grew up hearing stories of her summer there, which she still says is her second home. After this, she became a travel agent and had the chance to travel all over Europe, which I also heard stories about. This led to me looking up exchange programs to Italy and ultimately me creating this blog. It was when I heard of her stories that it made me realize that I can travel and have a grand adventure when I am still in high school. I can step out of my comfort zone and try something completely new at sixteen years old. I can find a place to call my 'second home', and I can tell stories of my adventures abroad for my whole life.

Marta (right) and I
I discovered exchange in 2009, but I stopped thinking about it for a while. I thought "This is too good to be true. This cannot happen when I am only in high school; it is too expensive. I had many doubts about going abroad. Fast forward a year to 2010. My best friend, Marta, moves to Croatia with her family. Her moving to Croatia is possibly one of the hardest things that has happened to me. It is a strange feeling, going from spending almost every day with someone who lives next door to having limited communication with them as they are halfway across the world. However, this is one of the most influential things that has happened in my life. When she moved, she told me stories about her new life. She told me about her school and life in Zagreb, Croatia. I thought it was extremely awesome how she was having this great adventure. Exchange popped back into my mind with these stories. I realized that something like this was possible, that I could live my dream of studying abroad. If Marta had not moved to Croatia, I may have not realized how big the world is and how many possibilities there are in a lifetime. I thank Marta for bringing my dreams to a bigger reality.

Overall, without these influential people in my life, I would not be writing this blog right now. I would not have realized my love for travel. I would not have known about foreign exchange programs in high school. They are the reasons behind who I am today and I thank them all for that.

I want to do an exchange for the adventure. I want to challenge myself like my Grandpa, Aunt, and best friend. I want to be able to tell stories for years and years after I come back from abroad. I want to see the world, culture, and get to know the people of a country. I want to become a citizen of the world and live my life to the fullest. Thank you to Grandpa, Aunt Annie, and Marta for letting me realize anything is possible if you want to achieve it.

Change of Plans!

Okay, I haven't posted on here for a while because I was confused on what to do. I am not going on Rotary Youth Exchange next year. Maybe the year after, but not next year. I am going to do a summer program before a year program. I am more comfortable with it and my family is, too.

ANYWAY, I am applying for the Finland US Senate Exchange Scholarship for summer 2012! I REALLY hope I get accepted. It is with YFU.

I may also apply for a NSLIY scholarship. I'd love to go to Jordan but I don't think my parents would be into that. I do not know which countries to put on my list!

One Year Until Exchange

That is crazy!

I thought I would post a little update about my finalized country choices because they have been this way for a month or so and I don't think they will change.

1.) Italy
2.) Sweden
3.) Brazil

In my district, you only need three choices rather than five or forty like some big multidistricts have. Thank goodness! Making a list with three countries is easier than making one with five.

I can't wait until I have exciting things to post updates about!

Country Choices

Lately I've been second guessing some of my country choices. There are just so many options and I don't know for sure which countries I want on my list. Right now it is somewhat like this:

1.) Italy
2.) Belgium
3.) Norway vs. Sweden.
4.) Argentina vs. Brazil.
5.) Brazil?

I am considering going way out of my comfort zone and thinking about putting India on my list. Do I want Japan? Finland?

This is difficult.

Exchange News Update

Not much has happened since I last wrote, but here is a little of what has happened since April:

1.) I found out I can go to an inbound district meeting on August 27th!

2.) I don't have to turn in my application until October. It seems so long away.

3.) District interviews are not until November which seems ever LONGER away.

That's all that's happened exchange wise, so not much. However, it is now summer!

Well I guess I will update this when some exciting exchange thing happens! Hopefully that will be soon.

My Fundraising Plans

Yesterday was one of the happiest days of my life so far. After years of freaking out about telling my parents I wanted to exchange, I finally told them, and they both said yes!

I went to the library last night and got about twelve books on different countries. I REALLY want to go to Greece but I don't think Rotary has it for long term. Oh well, I don't think Italy is ever going to change from my number one spot anyway.

So now my main problem is raising money. The whole Rotary program is going to be around $3500, which includes a monthly spending money, but I am going to try and raise more. How much spending money I need depends on where I go, though. If I end up in South America I probably won't spend as much as in Europe.

How am I going to save up this money? I have a few ideas. I'll make around $500 from Youtube in a year (I am partnered with Youtube), birthday money, and Christmas ($300). That alone is $1300ish. I have to raise $2700 more. I'm hoping to get a job this winter/next spring, and make about $1000 from that. I think I will have to fundraise the remaining $1700 or get donations from people.

That is basically what is going on right now; I am trying to raise the money. Maybe I shouldn't have bought that Dunkin' Donuts coffee last night?

Top five countries as of now:
1.) Italy
2.) Sweden
3.) Argentina
4.) Belgium
5.) Brazil

Telling my Mom about Exchange

This morning, I gave my mom a HUGE packet of information than ran upstairs to take a shower. A half hour later, when I came down, I was expecting her to say no. She said yes! She thinks doing this exchange will be a great idea! So part one of three is complete.

Part 1: Asking my mom
Part 2: Asking my dad
Part 3: Finding out ways to raise money.

I am SO excited right now! This is one of the greatest days ever!

Oh, and right now, my top countries are somewhat like this:
1.) Italy
2.) Argentina
3.) Belgium
4.) Sweden
5.) Brazil

But to be honest these will probably change orders in the next five minutes. How am I supposed to choose?

Jenna's Adventure Introduction

Hello! My name is Jenna and you probably came across this blog because you are a study abroad student or are looking into studying abroad in high school. Well, I am looking into studying abroad in high school, and I hope this blog will take me all the way through my possible exchange in 2012-2013!

Some basic facts about me are that I am currently fourteen, live in Ohio, have three siblings, and am a freshman in high school. I like to play guitar in my school's jazz band, make films and videos on my Youtube, and travel.
Now that I've got that out of the way, I should talk about studying abroad. I hope to go through the Rotary Program my junior year of high school. This is a CHALLENGE because my parents closed minded about things like this. I have not even mentioned it yet!
However, if they do say yes, I have many countries I want to exchange to. These include Italy, Croatia, Iceland, Argentina, and more. I have to narrow that down to three, and I am sure I will change my mind at some point.
This is basically just a small intro into my blog which I hope I will write in sometime in another country!
